Daniel J. McCauley was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on April 25, 1865. After graduating from Notre Dame, he worked with his father, a well known contractor, for ten years. Then he worked three years with the Kenefick Construction Company on railroad construction. Then he worked in business in Des Moines, Iowa for four years working as general inspector of sewers in Brooklyn, New York. On January 6, 1906, he then moved to the Isthmus of Panama as General Foreman in the Department of Construction with oversight of work at Culebra, Pedro Miguel, Paraiso and Balboa. He died on September 3, 1921, was buried at the Mt. Hope Cemetery then reinterred at the Corozal American Cemetery in 1979.
