George W. Steiner was born in Homewood, Illinois on May 26, 1858. He initially worked for the Cooper Institute in New York City, then employed by the Merrill Brothers and then by the John Roch Shipyard in New York City. He moved to the Isthmus of Panama on November 9, 1904 and rose to General Foreman in the Dry Dock and Marine Shops in the Atlantic Division. After retirement he remained in Panama. He died on June 14, 1935, was cremated and buried at the Corozal American Cemetery.
