Sergeant First Class Akins was a medic with the Medical Company, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was listed as Missing in Action while tending his wounded comrades near Unsan, North Korea on November 2, 1950. He was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were recovered on April 12, 2007 and identified on May 7, 2008. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
