Major Apodaca was a member of the 389th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 366th Tactical Fighter Wing, Da Nang, South Vietnam. On June 8, 1967, he was flight commander of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on and armed reconnaissance about 22 miles northeast of Dong Hoi, North Vietnam. The aircraft was hit by hostile fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on April 27, 1989 and identified on May 15, 2001. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
