Private First Class Balog was a member of a 75mm recoilless rifle team with Company H, 2nd Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. On September 6, 1950, he was defending his position against a numerically superior force near Am-Sin, South Korea. When it became necessary for his team to withdraw, he volunteered to remain and cover the withdrawal. After the team withdrew, his position was overrun and he was mortally wounded.
