For his leadership and valor, Ensign Bateman was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Ensign Bateman was the pilot of a F4U-4B Corsair fighter-bomber with Fighter Squadron 53 aboard the aircraft carrier USS ESSEX (CV-9). On October 28, 1951, his aircraft was hit by enemy anti-aircraft artillery fire during a glide bombing run at BU 7056, lost a section of its wing, crashed and exploded. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
