Chief Warrant Officer, Second Class Butler was a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 214th Aviation Battalion, 164th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade. On March 20, 1970, he was an observer in a Cessna Bird Dog Observation Aircraft (O-1G) on a visual reconnaissance mission over Vinh Binh Province, South Vietnam with a stop at the Province capital, Phu Vinh. His last report was that the aircraft was headed to Tra Vinh and contact was lost. His remains were recovered on April 27, 1989 and identified on September 4, 1997. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
