Lieutenant Colonel Canney was a member of Headquarters and Service Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was seriously Killed in Action while fighting the enemy north west of Yudam-ni, North Korea near the Chosin Reservoir on November 28, 1950. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
