Lieutenant Colonel Cardarella was the pilot of a F-80C Shooting Star fighter-interceptor with the 35th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 8th Fighter Bomber Group. On August 1, 1950, while on a combat mission along the road from Chochiwon to Chonan, South Korea, his aircraft struck a cable strung between two mountains and crashed five miles southeast of Chonui.
