Lieutenant Commander Carmichael was the pilot of a F4U-4 Corsair fighter and the commander of Fighter Squadron 144 (884) aboard the carrier USS BOXER (CV-21). On April 24, 1951, while leading a close air support mission, his aircraft was hit by an anti-aircraft shell fragment. He bailed out and struck the tail assembly. He died shortly after rescue from the injuries received.
