Private Cuthbert was a member of Company I, 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. On April 29, 1953 near Sandong-ni, North Korea, it was raining, so he placed a poncho over his outpost position, blocking the escape of carbon monoxide fumes from his charcoal heater.
