Private First Class DeHaan was a member of the 75mm Recoilless Rifle Platoon, Company D, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was taken Prisoner of War while defending his position against a superior enemy force in South Korea on May 18, 1951. He died of intestinal tuberculosis in a makeshift hospital at Prisoner of War Camp Number 1, in Chong Song, North Korea on February 19, 1952.
