Lieutenant Colonel Doby was a member of the 41st Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, Takhli Air Base, Thailand. On February 4, 1967, he was a crew member of a Douglas Destroyer Electronic Surveillance Aircraft (EB-66C) on an a strike against the Thai Nguyen Army Depot, 32 miles northwest of Thai Nguyen, Bac Thai Province, North Vietnam. About 40 miles from the Chinese border, his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on September 30, 1977 and identified on November 1, 1977. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
