Ensign Fegan, U.S. Naval Reserve, was a member of Fighter Squadron 96, Carrier Air Wing 9 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS RANGER (CVA-61). On April 9, 1965, he was the Radar Intercept Officer of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4B) flying Combat Air Patrol over the Gulf of Tonkin when he engaged by Chinese MiGs near Hainan, China. Contact was lost. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
