Lieutenant Commander Felts was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War, he was a assigned to the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio as a student in the Graduate Aeronautical Engineering Course. On July 6, 1953, he was the pilot of an Air Force Beechcraft C-45B Expeditor, which crashed after takeoff from Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, killing him and three Air Force personnel.
