Corporal Gopp was a member of the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 164, Marine Air Group 16, 1st Marine Air Wing. On August 3, 1967, he was crew chief of a Boeing Sea Knight Cargo Helicopter (CH-46A) rescuing a Marine patrol from the A Shau Valley, South Vietnam, when his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on June 8, 1994 and identified on July 10, 2001. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
