For his leadership and valor, Corporal Hanson was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
Corporal Hanson was a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. On October 14, 1951, his platoon was assaulting a hill near Songhyon-ni, North Korea. He singlehandedly assaulted an enemy machine gun emplacement and destroyed the emplacement and killed the occupants, before he was fatally wounded.
