For his leadership and valor, Lieutenant Colonel Hinckley was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Lieutenant Colonel Hinckley was a member of Headquarters Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was seriously Wounded in Action in North Korea on November 26, 1950 and returned to duty two days later. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy in North Korea on November 30, 1950 and died while a prisoner on May 22, 1951. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
