Colonel Jones was a member of the 558th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On November 29, 1967, he was the bombardier/navigator of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on a mission 5 miles southwest of Sepone, Savannakhet Province, Laos, when his aircraft was shot down over Xepon by hostile fire. His remains were recovered on November 20, 2000 and identified on November 26, 2001. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
