Colonel Karst was a member of the 21st Tactical Air Support Squadron, Pleiku, South Vietnam. On November 16, 1968, he was the pilot of a Cessna Bird Dog Observation Aircraft (O-1G) on a visual reconnaissance over South Vietnam. After reporting his position 2 miles east of Pleiku, radio contact was lost. His remains were recovered on June 21, 1989 and identified on August 6, 1993. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
