Lieutenant Colonel Kwortnik was a member of the 435th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On August 1, 1966, he was the pilot of a Starfighter (F-104C) on an escort mission over North Vietnam. His aircraft was hit by a surface to air missile that did not exploded, but damaged his aircraft. He ejected safely but contact with him was lost. His remains were recovered on August 14, 1985 and identified on October 24, 1985. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
