Captain Long was a member of SU-1, 1st Air-Naval Gunfire Liaison Company. On December 20, 1969, he was flying in a North American Rockwell Bronco (OV10-A) over Phouc Tuy, South Vietnam when the aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on December 16, 1992 and identified on May 3, 2004. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
