Captain Martin was a member of the 38th Air Rescue Squadron. On September 20, 1965, he was the co-pilot of a Kaman Huskie Search and Rescue Helicopter (HH-43B) on a rescue mission 10 miles from the border of Laos in Ha Tinh Province, North Vietnam. The helicopter was shot down near Tan An and he was taken prisoner. He died in captivity. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
