Lieutenant McWhorter was a member of Light Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron 63, U.S. Navy. On August 29, 1965, he was the pilot of a Vought Crusader Reconnaissance Fighter (RF-8A) on a combat mission northeast of Vinh, Nghe An Province, North Vietnam when his aircraft was hit by enemy fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on April 10, 1986 and identified on February 19, 1987. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
