Lieutenant Murphy was a member of Fighter Squadron 96, Carrier Air Wing 9 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS RANGER (CVA-61) in the Gulf of Tonkin. On April 9, 1965, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4B) to fly a combat Air Patrol. While engaged with Chinese aircraft near Hainan, his aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
