For his leadership and valor, Technical Sergeant Newell "Whiskey" was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with 2 Gold Stars, the Air Medal with 4 Gold Stars, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
Technical Sergeant Newell was the pilot of a F4U-4B Corsair fighter with Marine Fighter Squadron 323, Marine Air Group 12 aboard the aircraft carrier USS BADOENG (CVE-116). On December 7, 1950, while making a strafing run on enemy positions near Hagaru-ri, Korea, his aircraft was hit by small arms fire and crashed into a hillside. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
