Captain Nystul was a member of the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 164, Marine Air Group 36, 1st Marine Air Wing. On April 29, 1975, he was the pilot of a Boeing Sea Knight Cargo Helicopter (CH-46D) on an evacuation mission. When trying to land on the deck if the USS HANCOCK (CVA-19) he received a normal wave off, but was unable to make a second try and crashed along side the carrier. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
