Major Seward was a member of the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 165, Marine Air Group 36, 1st Marine Air Wing. On March 6, 1968, he was the pilot of a Boeing Sea Knight Cargo Helicopter (CH-46A) on an insertion mission in South Vietnam. At the drop zone the aircraft received small arms fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on October 7, 1994 and identified on June 9, 2000. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
