Second Lieutenant Sheppard was a member of Company I, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On June 5, 1951, after his company had taken a hill near Hwachon, North Korea, the Chinese counter-attacked. He was Killed in Action by an enemy mortar blast.
