Radioman Second Class Smith was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Radioman Second Class Smith was a crew member of the salvage ship, USS GRAPPLE (ARS-7). On the night of August 15, 1952, his ship was on patrol off the Korean coast, looking for enemy sampans laying mines, "flycatcher" Duty. The minesweeper, USS CHIEF (AM-315) accidentally fired two rounds at the USS GRAPPLE, one striking the pilot house, killing two seamen and wounding nine others.
