Chief Warrant Officer, Second Class Soyland was a member of Company C, 158th Aviation Battalion, 101st Airborne Division. On May 17, 1971, he was the aircraft commander of a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1H) on an assault/extraction mission about 10 miles northeast of Khe Sanh, Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. Upon approaching the target, his aircraft was hit by ground fire and and crashed. He safely exited the aircraft was seen the next morning but could not be rescued and was declared Missing in Action. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
