Private Spear was a member of the 2nd Platoon, Company K, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. On July 11, 1950, his platoon was defending a position near Choni, South Korea. When it came under fire, he singlehandedly attacked a machine gun position and drove the enemy away until he was killed by other enemy fire.
