Captain Stearns was a member of the 390th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Danang Air Base, South Vietnam. On September 11, 1969, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a mission 5 miles southeast of Sepone, Savannakhet Province, Laos, when his aircraft was shot down by hostile fire. His remains were recovered on May 22, 1990 and identified on November 7, 1990. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
