Chief Warrant Officer, Second Class Stewart was a member of Company C, 158th Aviation Battalion, 101st Airborne Division. On February 8, 1971, he was aircraft commander of a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1H) operating on an insertion mission about 10 miles from Lao Bao, Savannakhet Province, Laos when the aircraft's tail rotor sustained damage. While trying to return to the pickup zone about 5 miles inside the South Vietnam border the aircraft inverted, crashed and burned. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
