Colonel Thompson was a member of the 389th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Danang Air Base, South Vietnam. On August 1, 1968, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a night armed reconnaissance mission near Ban Karai Pass, North Vietnam, when his aircraft was hit by hostile fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
