Sergeant Tycz was a member of Company A, 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, Khe Sanh, South Vietnam. On May 10, 1967, he was killed while fighting the enemy when on patrol along the Demilitarized Zone near Khe Sanh, South Vietnam. His remains were recovered on May 27, 2003 and identified on November 22, 2004. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
