Captain Van Sickle was the pilot of a RB-26C Invader bomber with the 12th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing. On October 8, 1951, while returning from a reconnaissance mission in bad weather, his aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed at Iki-Shima, Japan 30 miles northwest of Itazuke Air Base.
