Colonel Ward was a member of the 430th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On December 18, 1972, he was the pilot of a General Dynamics Aardvark Fighter (F-111A) on a mission to bomb the Hanoi, International Radio Communication Transmitter, North Vietnam. After the bombing radio contact was lost with his aircraft. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
