Colonel Wilburn was a member of the 41st Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, Takhli Air Base, Thailand. On February 4, 1967, he was a crew member of a Douglas Destroyer Electronic Surveillance Aircraft (EB-66C) on an a strike against the Thai Nguyen Army Depot, 32 miles northwest of Thai Nguyen, Bac Thai Province, North Vietnam. About 40 miles from the Chinese border, his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on June 21, 1989 and identified on December 20, 1989. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
