Colonel Williamson was a member of the 12th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On July 7, 1965, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission 15 miles southeast of on Vinh, Ha Tinh Province, North Vietnam where his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on January 23, 1989 and identified on August 4, 1989. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
