Staff Sergeant Young was a rifleman with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. On May 17, 1968, he was on a combat patrol in assault boats in the Gia Dinh area of South Vietnam. His boat was in the lead and was ambushed with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
