For his great leadership and valor, Corporal Young was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
Corporal Young was a member of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was seriously wounded while fighting the enemy in South Korea on September 14, 1950 and returned to duty on September 22, 1950. On October 9, 1950, he received multiple wounds as he while participating in an attack on enemy positions near Kaesong, South Korea. Refusing medical aid he fired on the enemy killing 5 and directed friendly tank fire, until he lost consciousness. He died of those wounds on November 5, 1950.
