American Battle Monuments Commission to reopen all 12 cemeteries in France

ARLINGTON, Va. (Nov. 27, 2020) —  On Saturday, Nov. 28, 2020, the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) will reopen its 12 cemeteries in France, including the Normandy American Cemetery, which recognize the valor of the Americans who died or went missing during the two World Wars.

“We’re pleased to be able to announce the reopening of the grounds at our ABMC sites across France, where nearly half of our sites are located, and we remain committed to efforts to help ensure the health and safety of all,” said Tina Young, Director of Cemetery Operations.

ABMC is reopening cemetery grounds to visitors in coordination with local and US government officials and in alignment with steps being taken by the French Government to ease certain pandemic restrictions. Certain areas of ABMC sites, such as visitor centers, will be closed or may have restricted access. Guests will be required to wear masks, use hand sanitizer, and follow social distancing guidelines. Additional information and instructions may be provided by ABMC staff at sites.

Next-of-kin, family members of the fallen, and World War II veterans are strongly encouraged to contact the cemetery staff of the site they would like to visit in advance for additional assistance or information. ABMC also reminds potential visitors that, while some sites may be closed due to COVID-19, we continue our sacred mission to honor the service, achievements and sacrifice of the more than 200,000 U.S. service members buried and memorialized at our sites.
