Honoring America’s Fallen Heroes Memorial Day at ABMC

Published February 12, 2026

ABMC commemorates Memorial Day

The American Battle Monuments Commission commemorates Memorial Day to honor the service and sacrifice of U.S. service members who gave their lives in defense of freedom.

The meaning and history of Memorial Day

Observed on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day traces its roots to the aftermath of the Civil War, when communities placed flowers and flags on the graves of fallen soldiers in springtime tributes known as “Decoration Days.” After World War I, these observances expanded to honor American service members who died in all wars. The U.S. Congress formally established Memorial Day as a national holiday in 1971.

This enduring spirit of remembrance lies at the heart of ABMC’s mission. ABMC honors more than 200,000 fallen service members at its overseas cemeteries and memorials — from the fields of Normandy to the shores of the Pacific — ensuring that their courage and sacrifice are never lost to history.
