Sergeant First Class Kohl was a member of Headquarters Battery, 9th Field Artillery Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. On April 6, 1951, he was crossing the river three miles northwest of Chunchon, North Korea, when his boat sank and he drowned. Sergeant First Class Kohl was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
