Captain Nystrom was the commanding officer of Attack Squadron 172, Carrier Air Wing 1 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT (CVA-42). On December 2, 1966, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4C) on an armed reconnaissance in the Red River delta area south of Hanoi, North Vietnam. When he was about 15 miles southwest of Hoanh Dong, his aircraft was shot down by surface to air missiles. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
