Captain James was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War, he was a the pilot of a twin engine C-45 transport from Headquarters Squadron, Eastern Air Defense Force, Stewart Air Force Base, New York. On October 27, 1952, he was enroute to Burlington, Vermont, when one engine failed. He tried to return to Stewart AFB, but was unable to, so he ditched the plane in the Hudson River near Newburg, New York. Three in the aircraft drowned.
