Robert O. Wefald

Robert O. “Bob” Wefald is a retired North Dakota State District Court Judge, having served two 6-year terms from 1999 to 2010. He was North Dakota attorney general for four years from 1981 through 1984. Prior to his election, he was a law clerk for the North Dakota Supreme Court in 1970/1971, and from 1971 to 1980 he was a shareholder/partner with the firm of Wheeler, Wolf, Wefald and Peterson in Bismarck, North Dakota. He was a solo practice attorney from 1985 until 1998, when he was elected to the bench. A retired U.S. Navy captain, Judge Wefald served three years on active duty and 24 years in the Navy Reserve. He served on board the guided missile destroyer USS Lynde McCormick from February 1965 through June 1967, including a tour off the coast of Vietnam in 1966 as the gunnery officer. In the Navy Reserve he commanded four units and was twice awarded the Navy Commendation Medal. As chairman of the USS North Dakota Committee, Judge Wefald organized and led the fund raising for all of the events surrounding the commissioning of USS North Dakota (SSN-784) on October 25, 2014. As the chairman of the USNS City of Bismarck Committee he was given the honor on January 18, 2017 of “Authenticating the Keel” of USNS City of Bismarck (T-EPF-9). From 2011 to 2017, Wefald served as the State Chair of the North Dakota Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. He is a 1964 graduate of the University of North Dakota and a 1970 graduate of the University of Michigan Law School. His wife, Susan, served as an elected member of the North Dakota Public Service Commission from 1993 to 2008.
