For his leadership and valor, First Lieutenant Cope was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Notes
First Lieutenant Cope was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he commanded the 3rd Platoon, Company K, 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded by the enemy in South Korea on May 20, 1951 and returned to duty June 30, 1951. On October 6, 1951, as he led his platoon in an attack on Hill 867 in North Korea, he saw that the other platoons of Company K, were pinned down by enemy fire. He directed a frontal assault which was successful and was mortally wounded.
