Lieutenant Commander Ashby was a member of Fighter Squadron 114, Carrier Air Wing 11, United States Navy aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63). On January 10, 1967, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4B) over South Vietnam when his aircraft was shot down over water. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
